Tips for Creating the Perfect Summer Garden

The summer months are the perfect time to make the most of your outdoor space. To ensure your garden is looking its best and your space is usable in the warmer weather it is important to choose the right flora and ensure your space is protected from the elements.

Planting hardy, drought tolerant plants will ensure your garden requires less watering and maintenance in summer – your garden bed will look great even when the sun is at its most powerful. There are plenty of on-trend options in the drought hardy category, including some of the below:

Agave attenuate “Ágave” : An extremely attractive succulent with a thick trunk, often branching at the base. The branches are topped by rosettes of pale green, fleshy leaves without any spines. Thrives in pots or in-ground.

Correa relexa“Dusky Bells” : Lush looking native shrub. Suitable for full sun-to part-shade positions. Responds well to clipping and hedging. Dark green glossy foliage with masses of soft pink-red flowers throughout winter and early spring.

Fraxinusornus ‘’Flowering Ash’’ : Hardy and attractive tree for larger gardens. Grows to 10m and prefers full sun. Tolerates exposure to windy sites and coastal areas. Dark green leaves turning burgundy to pink-orange for autumn, with prolific and fragrant creamy flowers during spring.

Enclosing your entertaining space or introducing shade to your backyard through pergolas, covered decking or blinds will also serve to increase the functionality of your outdoor area, providing protection from the elements all year round. It is also beneficial to view your outdoor space as an outdoor room and furnish it accordingly so that you can make the most of it when friends and family visit.
